A well-chosen gemstone can outlast generations, but only with sensible care. Most coloured gemstones are more resilient than people assume, though each has its own considerations.

Sapphires and rubies, among the hardest natural materials after diamond, tolerate daily wear well. Softer stones, such as spinel, benefit from a little more care - removed before swimming, sport, or household chemicals, and cleaned only with warm water and a soft brush.

We recommend having any piece of fine jewellery inspected annually, to check that settings remain secure. A gemstone rarely fails - but a worn prong occasionally does, and it is far easier to prevent a loss than to recover one.
